Already having his best season, Matt Kuchar got off to his best start of the year Thursday in the BMW Championship. A mystery season for Tiger Woods took another unexpected turn.

Kuchar, who won the opening FedEx Cup playoff event to position himself for the $10 million bonus, wasted no time putting his name atop the leaderboard. He finished with an 18-foot birdie putt for a 7-under 64 and a one-shot lead over Ryan Moore.

Ian Poulter of England, who has finished in the top 10 only once since winning the Match Play Championship in February, had a 66 for the best round of the afternoon despite opening with a double bogey.

Woods also started with a double bogey, but he never got those shots back.

With one last bogey on the 18th hole, he wound up with a 73 to leave himself in a big hole as he tries to advance to the final stage of the playoffs in Atlanta. It was his highest round at Cog Hill since he opened with a 73 in the 2005 Western Open. It also ended a streak of 11 consecutive rounds in the 60s on the public course in the Chicago suburbs where he has won five times.

Woods should be used to rough starts by now. His scoring average in the first round this year is 71.08, compared with 68.9 a year ago in the same tournaments.

Even so, it was peculiar to hear him discuss how much ground he has to make up -- not against Kuchar, but the finish he needs to get into the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings and advance to the Tour Championship.

"As of right now, I'm only five shots back out of that spot," Woods said. "That's not bad."

Everything is good with Kuchar at the moment, except his voice. He is playing so well -- a winner at The Barclays, a tour-high 10 finishes in the top 10 this year -- that there's really nothing left for him to say.

Not that he had a choice. Kuchar has laryngitis and begged off a series of interviews, letting his score speak for itself. It was the second-best start of his career, and the 21st time in 23 events this year that he broke par in the opening round.

"Just keep playing," Kuchar said to one question he felt good enough to answer. "I was driving it well. I was actually doing everything well. It felt very good. Last week was a little bit suspect, and this week I kind of figured some stuff out."

Something clicked for Moore when he least expected it.

Dressed in a black sweater and white golf shirt, with a tie hung loosely around his neck, Moore was 1 over for the round and in a bunker on the 11th. He holed that out for birdie, hit 3-iron to 5 feet for birdie, and after a par, finished with five straight birdies.

"I certainly wasn't expecting to do that," Moore said. "I hit a horrible tee shot on 11 with an even worse lay-up, and then I hit a terrible shot from there into a bunker and then holed out. I don't know. Just got a little positive momentum going from there."

Poulter had to find some quickly. He hit his opening tee shot to the right on the 10th hole, put his approach into a front bunker and then caught that clean and sent it over the green. He missed a 4-foot putt and took double bogey, although it helped that it's about a 250-yard walk to the next tee.

"Nice first round," he said. "Not a very nice first hole, mind you."

Retief Goosen and Charlie Wi were at 67, while the group at 68 included Dustin Johnson, Luke Donald and Justin Rose.

Phil Mickelson, not a fan of Cog Hill, ended with a bogey on the par-5 ninth hole for a 72. Mickelson swapped out playing in the pro-am to do a corporate function, and instead played Butler National on Wednesday, which he raved about.

He was asked if it was harder to play a course for which he has little affection.

"Yes," he replied.

Woods feels the opposite, although that was hard to tell by the way he played. He began by hitting a poor bunker shot, an even worse chip and a bad putt for a double bogey. He missed a 3-foot birdie putt on the ninth. With an iron into the par-5 15th, he hit it well left into a tree and had to settle for par.

"I just didn't have much today," Woods said.

He also was nine shots behind in 2005 when he opened with a 73, and Woods wound up in second place two shots behind. But he was a little more predictable back then. What gave Woods hope is that despite such calm conditions, no one went lower than 64.

"Guys aren't going low at this place because the greens aren't good enough to go low," he said. "Obviously, there's a couple of players that have played well today, but overall, the guys just aren't tearing the place apart."

Woods is No. 51 in the standings, and the top 30 make it to the Tour Championship. He likely needs to finish around fifth place this week to go to East Lake in Atlanta.

The good fortune of Andres Romero appears to have run out. The Argentine birdied four of his last five holes at The Barclays to narrowly advance to the second round, and he tied for 11th in Boston to make it to the third round. He is No. 68 in the standings, but made five bogeys in six holes to start his round and shot 80.

Nadal hunting for the elusive US Open 2010

He gets fidgety when the subject comes up, like a mischievous child trying to avoid punishment.

He dodges, deflects, demurs.

Perhaps this is because, better than anyone, Rafael Nadal understands his personal degree of difficulty when it comes to winning the U.S. Open.

If he knew the remarkable backdrop of history working against him, he might never address the subject at all. A victory here for Nadal would end an intriguing but overlooked streak that stretches across 41 years.

With the Roland Garros and Wimbledon titles already secured, Nadal is trying to win his third straight major. That hasn't happened in a calendar year since 1969, when Rod Laver won all four Grand Slam singles titles.

Nadal has won on the hard courts of Melbourne, the red clay of Roland Garros (five times) and the grass at the All England Club (twice), but his seven visits to the National Tennis Center have yet to result in hoisted hardware.

Ask him why and the 24-year-old shakes his head.

"I don't know," Nadal said softly.

And then he starts talking about the tennis balls -- not as soft as Wimbledon's.

"The ball don't get that topspin that I like to play with," he explained.

The wind -- New York has more than any other Slam.

"Sometime when you are against the wind," he said, "seems like you are not moving the ball."

The court -- very fast in the heat of late summer.

"After a few years I think I am playing better and better in this tournament," he added, "but still the center court difficult to play, no?"

Mentally, New York seems to leave him unsettled. He's the No. 1-ranked player in the world, but three of his six sets (against unseeded players from the former Soviet Union) have spilled into tiebreakers.

Physically, too.

In the past, Nadal has limped into the U.S. Open, fatigued by a full schedule. This year, he is fresher than ever before. After winning Wimbledon he took a five-week break, which included three weeks of intense treatment for his sore knees that prevented him from practicing. He played only seven matches in Toronto and Cincinnati. Rafa did not seem particularly inspired.

Nadal's best efforts here came when he reached the semifinals the past two years, and his career trajectory suggests he will eventually win. After advancing to consecutive finals in 2006 and 2007, he won Wimbledon in 2008. He progressed from the quarterfinals in 2007 to the semifinals in 2008 to victory last year in Australia.

Twenty-one times in the Open era, a man has won two major titles in the same year, but fallen one tournament short of taking three in a row. Roger Federer has won three in a season, but in each case the French Open eluded him. In 2004, Gustavo Kuerten beat him in the third round. In 2006 and 2007, Federer fell in the final -- to Nadal.

Forty-one years ago, a slight, freckle-faced redhead from Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia, navigated his way through all four majors without a misstep.

Today that redhead is 72 years old and lives in Carlsbad, Calif.

"Forty-one years, eh?" Laver said, laughing. "A lot of water has gone under the bridge since 1969.

"No one's won three in a row since? That's really interesting. I hadn't thought of it that way myself. I wonder if Rafa can do it."

Daunting logistics

The speed of a tennis court is a subjective thing. Maybe that's why players delight in these kinds of technical discussions.

The blue DecoTurf II surface in Arthur Ashe Stadium is faster than the main courts in Toronto and Cincinnati, but the Grandstand is considered faster, not to mention the outside courts. This is because the Ashe surface is put down last and isn't subjected to the foot traffic and weather conditions that strip away some of the grit that grips the ball on impact.

Early in the tournament, players debated whether the Ashe court -- quickened by the hot conditions -- was faster than Wimbledon's grass-covered center court. Rafa insists that Wimbledon is quicker.

Federer disagrees.

"I just feel on average the U.S. Open could be the fastest Grand Slam, yeah," Federer said. "That could be one of the problems for Rafa here in the past. But the problems are on a very high level. I mean, the guy's won in Australia. This guy doesn't need to learn how to play on hard courts anymore."

Only once in the Open era has a man won three straight Grand Slam singles titles in a calendar year -- Rod Laver, who won all four in 1969. One five occasions, men won three majors in a year (Roger Federer, in 2004, 2005, 2007; Mats Wilander in 1988; Jimmy Connors in 1974).

At Roland Garros, he can win standing seven or eight feet behind the baseline. At Wimbledon, where the juicy, living grass causes the ball to skid on impact, Nadal has learned to play closer to the baseline. Although this aggressive style is against his nature, he has come close to mastering it.

"The way the ball jumps off the court, especially on the clay courts, it certainly is a tremendous advantage [for Rafa]," said Jimmy Connors, an eight-time major champion and Tennis Channel analyst. "[Here] the topspin jumps up into the hitting zone of the players. They seem to be able to take the ball a little bit earlier; it kind of jumps more into the hitting zones and allows them to have an opportunity to make a more solid strike."

In New York, because of the speed and the balls as well, Nadal is forced to be even more aggressive.

"I think the balls are faster here than they are at Wimbledon," Federer observed. "You can really hit through the court if you play aggressive here."

Said Rafa, "Is more difficult for me here, especially, I think, because the ball. I think is more easy to play for the [other] players when they have the flat shots, no?

"But I won Olympics with this ball. I won in Beijing in 2005 with this ball. I can do it."

It sounded like he was trying to convince himself.

The speed of the court matters because Nadal has been susceptible to the big servers like Juan Martin del Potro and Andy Murray here in the past. In his second-round match against hard-hitting Denis Istomin, Nadal fell into a 5-1 hole in the second set tiebreaker but managed to escape.

Perhaps the area Nadal has improved the most is his serve, especially in tight moments. He's second among ATP World Tour players in break points saved (69 percent), third in service games held (89 percent) and first in second-serve points won (59 percent).

Nadal and Federer have met 17 times in tournament finals -- a total surpassed only by Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe (20). With Nadal seeded first and Federer second, they could meet in the final here for the first time. With three in a row on the line for Rafa, that would be a delicious matchup.

Federer, who is normally a student of the game and its history, inaccurately said that Nadal had been to the semifinals here three years in a row. It's only two, but Federer is dead on with this analysis:

"On hard courts we have more opponents, or especially him, that it's just hard then to run through seven opponents. On the hard courts he's a bit more volatile."

The real thing

In 1969, Rod Laver won 22 of the 27 tournaments he entered. His match record that year was an almost surreal 167-15.

Laver's physical gifts were generous, but his ability to problem-solve is what carried him through the 26 matches required to complete his second Grand Slam. The most difficult moment came early in the run, at the Australian Open.

With the temperature at 105 degrees, Laver met fellow Australian Tony Roche in the semifinals. Laver won the first set 7-5, but he needed 42 games to win the second -- 22-20. Roche came back to win the third and fourth sets 11-9 and 6-1, but Laver won in the fifth 6-3. The match went more than 4½ hours.

"Certainly, experience allows you to do it [win all four], the things that go along with competing in one of these events," Laver said. "You have to take them one at a time. Go in with an attitude that if things don't work out in a match … don't panic. You have to work your way through it.

"You're thinking, 'Are you going to just fold up and say I've had enough -- or do you fight through it?' You also have to have that killer instinct. The thing in my game was that I don't give up. You say to yourself: 'The trophy is more important to me than it is to him.'"

Laver sees these qualities in Nadal.

"Yes, I do," he said. "Rafa wins the long rallies on important points -- it's hard to do, to keep the ball from not flying off racket. He just seems to rise to the occasion.

"I've noticed a few times this year, his serve gets him in trouble. But when he's down a break point and he serves an ace, that tells you he's very competitive. He's the real thing."

But can he win in New York?

The ATP Champions Tour asked eight of its luminaries to pick the winners in New York. Only two picked Nadal -- Michael Stich and John McEnroe, who won Wimbledon and the U.S. Open titles in 1981 and 1984, but fell short at the French Open.

"Rafael Nadal wants to win the U.S. Open so badly, and it would be hard not to pick him, even though he's never won it," McEnroe said before the tournament. "The guy's just an animal; he's mentally and physically incredible and he can definitely do it if he's in shape."

Connors also had two chances to win three straight majors but, like McEnroe, couldn't manage to win at Roland Garros.

"I would never count him out on anything," Connors said. "He's got the attitude and the mental toughness to go out and to play and to learn. He has proved that he can learn how to win on anything. To think that the U.S. Open is something that he cannot achieve in my opinion is a little bit crazy.

"He's only, what 23, 24 years old? Even though he has had moderate success there, the opportunity to win certainly isn't over. In my opinion, he hasn't even reached his prime yet, so that's kind of a scary thought."

Said Federer: "There's not much he's doing wrong. If you can make it to the semis, you can make it to the finals. That's pretty clear. It's just that he ran into guys who were dangerous, who were tough, who were better than him on the day. I remember when Murray beat him, or last year del Potro beat him -- they all played fantastic tennis."

Ivan Lendl came as close as you can come to winning three Grand Slam events in a row. In 1986 and 1987, he won at Roland Garros, lost in the finals at Wimbledon (to Boris Becker and Pat Cash, respectively) and then won the U.S. Open.

"I think this will always be the toughest one for him to win," Lendl said. "In my opinion, he will win it someday. But as long as Federer is playing well, it's going to be tough."

Laver sees it the same way.

"I think Rafa certainly does [have a chance]," Laver said. "But my gut feeling is [Federer]. He looks like he has his confidence back. Watching him [on television] in Cincinnati, he's starting to play effortlessly again. Not trying too hard and everything's just nice and slow off his racket. He knows he's going to miss some balls and, unlike some times last year, he doesn't seem concerned."

Although Laver allowed that winning three straight would be "pretty impressive," he said Federer's three-Slam seasons might have been more difficult.

"Three in a row -- I don't put much credence in that," Laver said. "In some ways, three out of four is more impressive, because it's over nine months, instead of four."

Still, winning on three different surfaces in that narrow timeframe would be unprecedented; three of the majors in Laver's day were played on grass. ESPN tennis analyst Brad Gilbert insisted that a win in New York would give Rafa the best season ever by a man.

Laver wonders how Nadal's knees will hold up on the concrete at the National Tennis Center.

"He's not limping," Laver said, "but there's a weakness in there. Will that come back and bite him? His Cincinnati effort was a little suspect. But you never know what can happen in two weeks. Bring your best tennis and it can happen for you.

"It will be fun to watch him to see if he can do it."

Before the tournament, Nadal was asked to assess his chances.

"I hope to have another chance to play well here, to have a chance to win, but without obsession, no?" he said thoughtfully. "I am more than happy what I have at home, all the tournaments that I won. Now I have the illusion to improve my tennis to play well here, and that's what I am trying all the time.

"For sure for me personal satisfaction going to be high if any day I have a chance to win here."

Roger Federer hit a decent lob over the head of Robin Soderling, and it looked like it hit a wall. The ball stopped, bounced and moved another foot closer to net before Soderling, now easily in position, rifled a forehand that Federer couldn't keep in the court.

On consecutive points, two of the world's best players shanked shots off their frames. The flag above Arthur Ashe Stadium was flat-out stiff for most of their quarterfinal match, with the wind blowing consistently between 18 and 20 miles per hour and gusting close to 30.

Tennis is difficult enough at this level when conditions are perfect, but this week at the National Tennis Center has been a trial for these elite players. The physically (and mentally) nimble players, the problem-solvers, who can adjust to the swift changes in trajectory and direction are the ones who advance.

On Wednesday night, Federer -- perhaps the greatest player in tennis history -- was magnificent amid the mayhem. The No. 2 seed mastered the wind and Soderling, too, winning 6-4, 6-4 7-5, to advance to a semifinal match against No. 3 Novak Djokovic.

It was over in four minutes less than two hours.

"The wind is blowing for everybody," Federer told the crowd afterward. "Thanks for sticking around."

Although Soderling never shortened in his long service toss, Federer's more efficient offering was nearly flawless. He served 18 aces and 48 percent of his serves (43 of 89) were unreturnable.

"If I can't serve in the wind, I've got a problem," Federer said. "You can wake me up at 2 or 4 in the morning, and I can hit serves."

This was a big step for the five-time U.S. Open champion, because the past two times he was in this spot -- at Roland Garros and at Wimbledon -- he lost his quarterfinal matches, to Soderling and Tomas Berdych, respectively. That ended a staggering streak of 23 consecutive major semifinals, and in some people's minds, signaled an end to his run of entitlement.

Soderling had lost their first 12 encounters, but the win in Paris seemed to bring a welcome cloud of calm to his game, and with it, confidence. But as he struggled with his exceptionally high ball toss on practice Court No. 5 more than three hours before the game, calm was not the word that came to mind.

The 26-year-old Swede came out swinging, though. He fought for four break points through the first six games, but Federer saved them all. When Federer finally held the hammer, he converted his first breaker, carving an exquisite drop shot into the wind that almost didn't bounce.

Serving for the first set -- and, under the heavy circumstances, effectively the match -- Federer was working from the west end of the stadium, into the wind. All he did was hit four unreturnable serves, at 125, 123, 124 and 117 mph.

Similarly, the second set went to Federer as Soderling sagged visibly. In the third set, for the first time, Soderling began to rein in his big game and stopped blasting for the lines. It earned him a break of serve, at 5-3, but Federer broke him back.

The Saints' first Super Bowl title was so big in New Orleans that Mardi Gras, a revered local institution dating back well more than a century, became popularly known as, "Lombardi Gras."

New Orleans' momentous victory over the Indianapolis Colts occurred in the middle of the city's parade season, so the Saints' celebratory ride through town with the Vince Lombardi Trophy was simply added to the lineup. In the following days, players, coaches, team officials and the trophy made appearances in traditional parades as well.

And while Mardi Gras ended way back on Ash Wednesday, it seems as though Lombardi Gras still isn't over quite yet -- certainly not by the looks of the French Quarter, where a massive concert stage has been built on the river front, overlooking historic Jackson Square.

In the hours before the defending champs kick off the NFL season against the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night in the Louisiana Superdome, the Big Easy will host a concert featuring Dave Matthews and Taylor Swift, an NFL-sponsored parade and a citywide bash for which a number of schools and businesses have already decided to shut down.

"It's like the Super Bowl all over again," Saints running back Reggie Bush said.

Indeed, Saints owner Tom Benson will show off the Lombardi Trophy once more at a newly completed festival plaza next to the Superdome that has been named Champions Square. Then the festivities move inside the dome, where those with the hottest ticket in town will witness the raising of a 2009 championship banner before kickoff.

The Vikings would like to see the party end right about there, and they have their reasons for believing they can make that happen.

Minnesota outperformed the Saints in numerous statistical categories when they met in last season's NFC championship game and might have won if not for five turnovers.

The Vikings outgained the Saints 165 yards to 68 on the ground and 310 yards to 189 in the air. In the end, Minnesota was done in by three lost fumbles and two interceptions, the last by Saints cornerback Tracy Porter when the Vikings were threatening to take a late-game lead.

"They took us to the brink of destruction," Saints safety Roman Harper recalled. "If it wasn't for another Tracy Porter pick, who knows where we would be. ... It was a great game last year and should be a great game this year."

There is one considerable difference, however, as Minnesota coach Brad Childress was quick to point out. When this game ends, both teams get to keep playing.

"We've got 15 games after that," Childress stressed. "You beat New Orleans, Miami's coming to town. You lose to New Orleans, Miami's coming to town."

That hasn't diminished interest in a game that also features the return of Brett Favre, who'll start his 20th season despite offseason left ankle surgery that had him mulling what would have been his third retirement. Instead, he reported to the Vikings halfway through the preseason.

"I feel pretty good," Favre said. "People continue to say, 'Can he hold up the whole year?' You can say that about any quarterback that plays the game. It seems like at age 40, and soon to be 41, that I am the easy target to pick on ... yet I continue to outlast all these guys."

Favre performed brilliantly in the NFC title game despite taking a pounding from a Saints defense that drew a few flags -- and fines -- for some of the heavy hits they delivered.

Childress and some of Favre's teammates have since suggested that the Saints appeared to be trying to hurt their quarterback, although Favre said this week he had no complaints.

The Saints say so-called "remember me" hits are part of an aggressive style taught by defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, and that they play the same way every game.

With the chatter that has gone back and forth, Saints quarterback Drew Brees figures the Vikings may be looking for a little payback. Certainly, it wouldn't hurt Minnesota's cause to knock the reigning Super Bowl MVP -- who completed an NFL record 70.62 percent of his passes last season -- out of the game.

"If you play defense in this league, you love to take a shot at the quarterback -- a legal, clean shot -- albeit you hit him as hard as you can," Brees said. "We've been pretty good in regards to protecting the quarterback, trying to get it out and to avoid sacks and all those things. ... Obviously, I know they're going to be coming after me, and that's fine."

Minnesota topped the NFL with 48 sacks last season, led by end Jared Allen's 14 1/2. The Vikings defense also ranked sixth in yards allowed (305.5 per game).

The Saints' offense led the NFL in total yards (403.8 per game) and has all of its key players back.

The biggest changes for New Orleans came on defense, where there will be three new starters, including Malcolm Jenkins at free safety while All-Pro Darren Sharper continues his rehabilitation from offseason knee surgery.

Minnesota's offense will be without injured receiver Sidney Rice, while running back Chester Taylor left for Chicago in the offseason.

Still, receiver Percy Harvin -- also a threat in the running game -- will be lining up all over the field, and the Saints still have to figure out how to stop Adrian Peterson. Peterson rushed for 122 yards and three TDs against New Orleans last year and who is eager to prove he's overcome his past fumbling problems.

Saints fullback Heath Evans summed up the rematch this way: "They've got a lot to prove, we've got a lot to prove, and we both know it, so it will be everything it's cracked up to be."

Can Tiger Woods Survive the BMW Championship

They might not have a formal deal, and his new student-teacher relationship will not be exclusive, but Tiger Woods is buying into what Sean Foley is selling.
That was certainly the vibe Wednesday at Cog Hill, where Woods played in the BMW Championship pro-am with Foley tagging along for a few holes, then joining him in the afternoon on the driving range.

Everything Woods does, of course, is scrutinized well beyond what anyone else faces, but the notion that the game's No. 1 player is ready to commit to the teachings of a coach whose philosophies differ greatly from previous instructors Hank Haney and Butch Harmon certainly is telling.

It means that Woods could very well struggle or fail to show results for the immediate future. And it very well might delay the return to greatness that saw him win six major championships under Haney from 2005 through 2008 and eight under Harmon from 1997 through 2002.

Asked if Foley was his coach, Woods replied, smiling: "He's coaching me."

Semantics aside, Woods has been spending time with Foley for more than a month. They worked together at the PGA Championship. They spent a few days together in Orlando, Fla. -- where Woods lives and where Foley is based -- prior to the Barclays.

And Woods has seen steady progress, although a few weeks ago he was not quite ready to dive into these waters.

"It's an understanding that I have to wrap my head around because it's going to take some time," he said prior to the Barclays.

Asked about that on Wednesday, Woods has obviously come a long way in two weeks.

"That's one of the things I had to understand," he said. "I needed to understand the whole concept before I committed to what I was doing. It's nice when you get rewarded with results, and the shots that I'm hitting now, it's been a long time since I've been able to do that. That's always a good sign.

"I've committed to the concepts, and more than anything, I understand what he's trying to teach. So that's the biggest thing."

Here's the rub: Is Woods willing to regress or struggle with his game while he figures out the nuances of Foley's methods?

It has happened each of the previous times he overhauled his swing in search of long-term consistency.

After winning four times in 1997, including the Masters, Woods went back to the drawing board with Harmon, won just once in 1998 and then went on a tear, winning 27 PGA Tour events, including eight majors, between 1999 and 2002.

In 2003, Woods won five times, but no majors, and had split with Harmon. He started working with Haney in 2004, a year in which he won just once, and had just one top-10 in majors.

The following year he went on another run that saw him win 31 PGA Tour events, including six majors, between 2005 and 2009.

But Haney, after six years, decided in May to part ways with Woods, who said he would go it alone. Now it is Foley's turn, and if the past is any indication of the future, Woods might need to invoke all of his powers of patience.

"That's where experience helps," Woods said. "I've been through it with Butch and I've been through it with Hank. I've been through it before and it's taken some time, and I understand that. I have no problem with that, as long as I keep making progress along the way."

The problem for Woods is the amount of attention his game receives, regardless. If Phil Mickelson misses a cut, Ernie Els finishes 50th, or any other top player goes through the inevitable down periods all golfers face, very little is made of it.

But just about everyone knows that Woods has not won on the PGA Tour in a year, that he has just two top-10s this season, that his three rounds to finish the Deutsche Bank last week marked the first time he had strung three together in the 60s since last year's Tour Championship. And every time he misses a fairway, the sirens start blaring.

A swing change is a complicated deal, even for Woods, which suggests he might not necessarily pile up the hardware with the amazing frequency of the past.

"When you're out there on the golf course playing, it's understanding how to fix it," Woods said. "That's the hardest part. You can do it on the range. You get into a rhythm or whatever it is and hit ball after ball after ball, but out here on the course you hit a couple bad ones, how do you fix it?

"And knowing the answer and being confident in the answer, that took a lot of time with Butch and it took some time with Hank, and it's taken some time with Sean, but not quite as long."

Unlike his arrangement with Haney, Woods will be sharing Foley with his peers.

Foley, a Canadian instructor who has relocated to Florida, teaches the likes of Stephen Ames, Sean O'Hair, Hunter Mahan, Justin Rose and Parker McLachlin. Foley said it will be no problem fitting Woods in.

"You don't need [exclusivity], it's not necessary, because you don't need that much time, especially when you live in the same area code," Foley said. "It's perfect."

Whether or not their work will turn into the kind of perfection Woods has displayed remains to be seen.

But it can't be judged immediately. As much as people expect great results from Woods no matter the circumstances, he has seemingly decided that it is OK to take a few steps backward in order to move forward.

Venus Williams advances on US Open 2010

NEW YORK -- Nobody does out-of-the box better than Venus Williams.

Ten years ago, she missed the first four months of the season with tendinitis (in both wrists), struggled mightily on clay and then -- poof! -- she went on a 35-match winning streak, lifting the trophies at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. After crashing out in the third round on the gnarly red clay at Roland Garros in 2005, 2007 and 2008 she went back home to Florida. Playing zero matches as preparation, she won the titles at Wimbledon.

Those were her last major victories, but the pattern is emerging again. After losing in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, a Venus was out of action for nearly three months thanks to a balky left knee. What did she do? Just rolled into the National Tennis Center here and won her first five matches.

You get the idea she could step out of a moving car and, with a degree of poise, stay on her feet. Perhaps even toss off her measured Miss America, post-victory wave.

This is impressive, because, hey, Venus isn't the 17-year-old girl with spectacular beaded cornrows who slashed her way into the final in 1997. She's 30 years old and, after making the semifinals or better each of the first six visits here, she's through to the semifinals for only the second time in seven years.

It wasn't nearly as easy as the ho-hum 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory over French Open champion Francesca Schiavone on Tuesday night might suggest. Not hardly. The last scheduled day match spilled more than an hour into the night session and lasted six minutes shy of two hours.

Venus will play No. 2 seed Kim Clijsters in what promises to be a high-strung Thursday semifinal match.

Not bad for a pair of 30-year-olds; Venus and Schiavone represented the first all-30-something major quarterfinal since 16 years ago, when Gigi Fernandez beat Zina Garrison in straight sets.

In Arthur Ashe Stadium, Venus couldn't even properly warm up her serve because the wind was gusting close to 20 mph.

"I thought, 'Oh, my god, what are we in for today?'" Venus said. "I'm a strong player, and I hit hard, but I felt like I had nothing."

It was a pleasing contrast in styles, with the No. 3-seeded Venus hitting bombs from both sides, while No. 6 Schiavone scrambled and scraped and sliced her way into points.

Before the match, Nick Bollettieri, who has coached Venus over the years, had this advice: "Venus has got to come forward. That Italian girl can kill you with all those slices."

This she did, consistently moving forward and winning 18 of 33 points at the front of the court.

The first game turned out to be the match in microcosm, with Venus breaking Schiavone -- it lasted eight minutes and saw five deuces and 16 total points. And then Schiavone won the next two games with her usual racket wizardry, but fell in the tiebreaker after losing the first four points -- and winning the next four. She sprayed a forehand long and fired a ball into the stands in anger.

The second set was a break-fest, but Schiavone -- who was broken five times (to four for Venus) -- just couldn't compensate for a serve that averaged 15 mph less than Venus'.

"I think today she served good, and with more wind she has more chance than me. Because when I was serving against the wind, I am [5-foot-5½], and I try to push as much as I could. But is not like [6-1] Venus -- she serve on second floor and with the big power.

"So it's OK. It's not OK, but it's OK."

Said Venus, "I don't think either of us were able to play our exact normal game because it was just hard to make a choice in the wind. I think you end up playing a little safer, more toward the center of the court.

"But I feel like when the stakes were higher I was able to raise my game. She did, too. She played some great points. She's just so feisty that you have to kind of keep her at bay."

The fall line of Venus' EleVen clothing line has been on display here at the U.S. Open, causing a sensation when Venus strips off her warm-up jacket before the first point. She has shown some startling variety (and brevity) and, as it turns out, Venus is a shrewd planner. She has seven different outfits hanging in her Manhattan hotel room -- one for each match required to win the title.

So far, we've seen: (1) a black gown with a flapper fringe; (2) a patterned black-and-white top with black compression shorts; (3) a clingy black dress with swirling silver spangles; (4) a raspberry tank top with black shorts; and, against Schiavone, (5) a shocking pink dress with those spangles.

Not that we were really paying attention.

Schiavone has now lost all eight of her career matches against Venus, but afterward she was, well, feisty to use Venus' word.

"Is a lot of disappoint[ing], because I have the chance and the quality really to beat her, because she doesn't like to play with me," Schiavone said. "I play different ball; I push her in defense; I don't give her the chance to play how she want, so every time I think we have a big fight."

Venus, later apprised of those comments, seemed bemused.

"I like seeing my name next to her name," she said, smiling. "I'm good with that."

The Los Angeles crowd mostly reacted with disbelief and anger when Machida won a unanimous decision with identical 48-47 edges on all three judges’ scorecards. Even UFC president Dana White said he disagreed with the decision — and unlike the fans, White can do something about it.
He ordered a rematch to headline UFC 113 in Montreal on Saturday night, matching Machida against the countryman who solved mixed martial arts’ biggest riddle last time out.
Rua wasn’t a sore loser, and he refuses to get worked up about the chance to right what’s widely considered one of the UFC’s strangest decisions in recent years.
“This is all in the past for me right now,” Rua said through a translator. “And what gives me comfort is the fact that I’m having another shot at a title, and I’ll fight for the world championship again.”
Machida and Rua will meet in front of Canada’s famously passionate MMA fans on a card including Josh Koscheck’s 170-pound fight with Paul Daley, along with Kimbo Slice’s second UFC bout against former NFL player Matt Mitrione.

Lyoto ‘The Dragon’ Machida may be the champion in the Light Heavyweight division and by no means am I knocking him as a fighting because he has victories over Rashad Evans, Thiago Silva, Tito Ortiz, Rich Franklin, BJ Penn, Stephan Bonnar and … ugh, cough cough, Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua at UFC 104. But can you taste the bitterness? I hope I am not alone.

With Machida winning a unanimous decision victory over Shogun, 48-47 from all three judges, with one stating that Machida “landed the more damaging strikes throughout the fight” and was the more “effective aggressor”, it resulted in controversy. Many viewers and prominent MMA personalities (including Dana White) felt that Shogun had won the fight hands down.

Mayweather, however, has a chance to at least shush the critics now that he is finally going to face an elite welterweight in champion Shane Mosley, whom he meets in the year's biggest fight so far on Saturday night (HBO PPV, $54.95, 9 ET) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

"He had to fight somebody if he wanted to be considered the best," said Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs), a two-time welterweight champion, three-division champion and pound-for-pound list stalwart.

Mayweather said the criticism is unfounded. He said it's not his fault he is so dominant that he makes the wins look easy.

"When I fight guys who they say will give me a tough fight, I can't help that the fight is so one-sided the fight is boring. That's not my fault," he said. "It's just that I'm that good. That's not my fault. You got some fighters that's talented. You got some fighters that are God-gifted. You got some athletes that's God-gifted. I just happen to be one of those athletes that's God-gifted. That's no different than Kobe Bryant or LeBron James."

When Mayweather was a junior lightweight, he beat the best and he did it easily in dominant TKO victories against Genaro Hernandez and Diego "Chico" Corrales.

In Mayweather's first fight at lightweight, he won the title by taking a tight decision from the No. 1 guy, champion Jose Luis Castillo. Then he outpointed Castillo again in a rematch.

But since then, it's hard to look at Mayweather's résumé and find that he has faced the best in his division.

At junior welterweight, Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs) didn't fight the top opponents, leaving the division after an expected one-sided thrashing of Arturo Gatti in mid-2005 to claim a belt he never defended.

When he arrived at welterweight in late 2005, the division was stocked with talented potential opponents: Mosley, Antonio Margarito, Miguel Cotto and later Paul Williams and Pacquiao, just to name a few.
